What is worth learning?

What is worth learning?

Curriculum is the foundation to every students education. There are many different types of curriculum and ways to teach it. However, if the curriculum in our schools are important to our students and the foundation of what they will be learning, why are our students' curriculums becoming limited. By not presenting our student with all the information we are continuing harm students and create unwelcoming environments in our classrooms when subjects that are influential to our students.

During the module we had to create a blackout poem from an excerpt in the article "Ending Curriculum Violence" by Stephanie P. Jones. What I created is...

"Sites of learning rather than suffering and racial violence. Teachers should have continued support. Remaining silent or choosing to omit certain elements of history has the same impact. Do right by our students. Repair harm done to children by reconstructing curricula that have failed them."

To me this poem shows how damaging it can be to withhold information about history and other subjects with our students. Our curriculums should be inclusive to everyone and not have any biased towards the content that should be taught to our students. Teachers are there to provide instruction about the different subjects but they are also there to teach compassion, kindness, and empathy to name a few. To make our students feel safe in our classrooms we need to provide a classroom that is safe for them, by teaching about all areas of history and english students will know about all different types of people and be more accepting to all different kinds of peers. We have come a long way but the journey isn't over, creating inclusive environments will help students learning and creativity

  1. Hi Chandler! You're absolutely correct, curriculum is the foundation to a student's education. This is why it is important that we as teachers understand the value of it. Without understanding the value of curriculum, it is easy to withdraw certain information. It is also easier to lack the things we want to teach our children such as compassion, kindness, and empathy. Thanks for sharing!

    1. Hey Love! Thank you so much for reading my blog this week! I think it is extremely important to value what we are teaching our students and the curriculum that we share with them. I couldn't agree more that compassion, kindness, and empathy are somethings that we have to show our students. I think the best way to do this is to lead by example!

  2. Hi Chandler! I really enjoyed reading your blog post! I agree, and I think asking why our curriculum is being limited is a really important question. In my opinion, the curriculum should be going in the opposite direction, not adding limits. I loved this quote when I read the article too. I couldn't agree more about your entire last paragraph. The curriculum needs to be inclusive without bias towards anything. There's so much teachers do to help kids with and to teach them that goes beyond the curriculum. So much we need to do to create a safe learning environment for our students to grow and limits on curriculum can pull back from the environments we are trying to create for our students. What are some things you want to do in your class to create an inclusive environment for your students? Great post this week and I’m excited to hear your thoughts!

    1. Hey Sarah! thank your for taking the time to read my post! I really appreciate it! I agree that its important asking why our curriculum is being limited. I also think it's important to think about how this can negatively affect our students when we withhold information. In my future classrooms, i believe that it is important to give the students information that is free from biases. Keeping our own personal ideas and opinions aside, to allow for our students to obtain the information and be able to form their own opinions. It would also be beneficial to go into class with an open mind and help our students to do the same. Another important aspect is showing our students the important lessons on more than just the subjects they are taking in school. Especially with younger students teaching them how to have compassion and show others kindness as well as, other social and emotional skills is important. Our students are the future and it is important for us as teachers to help set them up for success and it starts with the curriculum we are presenting to them.

  3. Hey Alex! Thank you for taking the time to respond to my post this week! I love how you added that it is crucial for the curriculum to not limit the students access to information. I think this is extremely harmful to their education if students aren't taught and have access to the entirety of the information. For our future classrooms it is very beneficial to be inclusive and share information that as you said reflects diversity and complexity of the world the our students live in. For the benefit of our future students I believe that we have to share the truth to end the cycle of insinuating systematic injustice throughout our schools.
