What does Money Really Have to Do With It?

What does money really have to do with it?

This is a big question to tackle when talking about our educational systems within the country. Money unfortunately, has a big influence on a school districts ability to provide adequate education for their students. I have seen both sides of funding within school districts. My elementary school had very little funding for students within our school district.  This had and impact on not only the students, but on the teachers as well. In most situations, teachers have to pay for the majority of the supplies and resources within ones classroom. On the other hand, I was fortunate enough to attend a high school that had a sufficient amount of funding. This schools had the newest textbooks, computers, equipment, and materials for their classrooms. My school had more funding based on the area my school district was in, and greatly affected the way in which students learn information and the opportunities students were given.

From the video "Texas school funding still unconstitutional", they address the issues surrounding unequal distribution of funding for public schools. In the video they stated, "The quality of education for a boy or girl is going to be dependent on what his or her zip code is and that has to change." Having the main source of funding for public school being their property tax doesn't allow the same opportunities for students that don't have high property taxes in their area. Students should not be penalized based upon the area that they live, especially when it comes to students education. As teachers, I believe that it is our job to give our students the best quality education that we can provide. School funding may continue to be an issues for school districts, however students should not have to experience the reproductions of not enough funding.

  1. Hi Chandler! I completely agree with you on how students should not be penalized for where they live. Their education should be the best we have. You made excellent points about funding for school systems. Do you think we can ever accomplish having every student having equal access to the best education we can offer? Do you have any ideas on how we can achieve this? The unequal distribution of funding brings discrimination for lower income students and its sad to see these students not get as many oppurtunities.

    1. Hey Brittnee! Thank you for responding to my post! I do believe that one day we will be able to accomplish having every student gain equal access to education that we can offer. It will take time, however there are many things that will need to be improved within our education system. A good start to access equal opportunities would be working with the parents and the community as a whole rather than separate parts. I also think that school should put an emphasis on helping students who come from lower income families to create a better support system so these students can have a better chance at the same level of education as a student from a higher income family. Helping schools who have less funding to be able to get the most up to date textbooks and experiences for students can have a positive impact to this issue as well.

  2. Hey Chandler. I really enjoyed reading this blog post. It definitely has all of the best information from this chapter that I really have found helpful in the research aspect of this module. Schools that are underfunded is such a hard topic to wrap my own head around. It is not fair for students in low-income communities to be given a less than educational experience. They are certainly not given the same opportunities as wealthier schools and that is a real problem for our students that have to work that much harder to get on top. We as teachers must find ways to raise money for our schools or create lessons that are just as effective with little money. What are some of your ways that you could implement this in your own future classroom/School? I believe that I would create and brainstorm ways that I can make a fulfilling lesson with materials that do not involve too much money.

    1. Hey Megan! Thank you for responding to my blog! I completely agree with you that it is hard to imagine that students from low-income communities are not given the same level of education as higher income communities in most cases. I loved your idea of trying to raise more money for for these students. I think that another great way to help students is too is alloying for different grants. Grants can help to get these students money, textbooks, equipment, and new technology. I think your idea of doing activities and lessons that don’t involve that much money!
