Do I Have the Full Picture?
Do I Have the Full Picture?
Do I have the full picture? This is an important question that I believe all teachers need to think about and address inside their classrooms. It is so crucial to understand the entire picture before making assumptions or judgements. To me a teacher should be able to assist students inside as well as outside the classroom. There will be experiences and issues in students home lives. We may not always understand or know what is happening, and this is why it is essential to know the whole picture.
For me personally, I have experienced a time in my life where I struggled tremendously. My teachers and peers didn't understand what was happening in my personal life and how greatly I had been struggling. This had affects on my performance in school, however my teachers had thought I was slacking and being lazy before I even had gotten a chance to explain. Without knowing the true reasoning behind why I was struggling my teachers and peers were quick to judge.

Hey Serra, I really enjoyed your approach to this topic. I apricate your honesty when talking about you experiences when teachers and students didn't understand you or even ask questions about how you were doing. I have been through similar circumstances and know how hard that can be on one's mental health especially at a young age. My question to you would be how would you deal with a student that goes through similar challenges? Like you said we don't know what goes on in these students homes when they leave our classroom doors, so how as teachers can we help students that don't feel seen or heard? Also, I love how you included that we need to talk about the importance of people of color in history. Being able to talk about these historical figures will give our children who come from different races a backgrounds someone to look up to that looks like them instead of some weird looking white man. Overall, I really enjoyed hearing your point of view!
ReplyDeleteHey Ella, thank you so much for commenting back on my blog. Because of my past experiences i already feel better prepared if i had a student who suddenly began falling behind in school. I would begin my approaching the students, asking if everything is okay, seeing if they are willing to share and assess the situation from there. Every student is going to be different, no human reacts the same and emotions effect everyone in a variety of ways. Teaching to include people of all races and giving students someone to look up to shapes what kind of person the student will be. Some people don't have anyone in their lives to look up to and introducing positive figures of history for students to look up to is very important for teachers.
DeleteChandler, I really liked reading you blog. I think you hold some values of teaching kids inside and outside the classroom that I hold as well. I really think it is important as an educator to help students become better versions of themselves and not the way I plan but rather guide themselves towards self discovery in becoming better and I think this blog shows how you feel as well. I also like how you added personal experience as well I think it adds to how well you understand the topic and will make you a better educator in the future. I also think it is cool how you added the tik tok creator and explained how they talked about Ruby Bridges and the injustices that she had to face just as a little girl. Moreover, I like the way you added you point of view and how we should be more apt to talk about history and stories such as Ruby's to better help students feel accepted into the classroom.
ReplyDeleteHi Alex, thank you so much for reading my blog. I'm so glad to hear from teachers who hold similar values to mine, it's helpful when referring to teaching. guiding students to grow into their best and true self is what we sign up to do as teachers. We are small parts of their lives and we are meant to make an impact on them and people. Teaching doesn't stop at teaching material, teaching is helping students learn how to interact with others and participate in the world on their own. Using my past experiences to help guid my future teaching career is very important to me as a teacher, my past experiences have taught me lessons and helped me grow as a person, if i am able to be a guid for a students to help them learn those lessons my goal as a teacher would be complete. I hope i am able to help students feel accepted in my classroom and comfortable enough to come to me in their times of need.
DeleteHello Chandler! I agree, if there is one thing as teachers we need to ask ourselves is if we have the full picture. I relate to you in that I had a tough period in school with things going on at home and my mental health. Unfortunately I lost passion for school during that period and while some teachers did help others became like a bully. I remember having my history teacher look at me and tell me that he hoped I would fail and it destroyed me. Although his impatience with me turning in late work was understandable, no teacher should ever handle it the way he did. Had he asked me how I was and taken the time to help me I would have succeeded in his classes. We as teachers will not always know the true experiences of our students. And while they might act out or not turn in assignments at the end of the day we are there to help and we must always put ourselves in their shoes. I am terribly sorry for your own experiences. But I will say, I think thanks to what we went through you will have a better understanding and level of compassion for our students and I am so excited to see how we do in the future.
ReplyDeleteHi, Bella i'm glad you related to my blog post and i'm sorry to hear how your teacher handled that situation. As future teachers using our past experiences in school to make us better and more prepared teachers is so important! Trying to see the full picture isn't always going to be easy, when reading these replies i wonder to myself how i would handle these situations as a teacher. I encourage you to do the same, it's been helping me think about different situations and variables of those situations.
DeleteHi Chandler! I agree that it is very important to have the full picture in the classroom as a teacher. When I was a student teacher I heard that phrase all the time. As a teacher, you are in charge of the classroom and need to know what is going on. The reason for that is so that you can move the classroom in the right direction when you have all the knowledge. I think like you said having the full picture can help us assist in the classroom better. I appreciate you sharing your story and know a lot of people can relate to a time in their life when something made them feel similar to how you were feeling. I loved how you brought up how it affected the material too. This is something that I didn't think about but think it is very true now that you mentioned it.
