Introduction

Why Teach?

Hey everyone! My name is Chandler Serra. I am currently a sophomore at Texas State University, majoring in elementary education. Ever sine I was little I always enjoyed spending time with other kids and looked up to the teachers I had growing up. My teachers helped me to love learning, and helped me get my passion for wanting to teach and help future students who were like myself. Being able to be someone my students look up to is something that I can’t wait to do. I believe that students, especially ones who are just starting out their educational careers are so impressionable and eager to learn. I am so incredibly excited to be able to teach and help change my future students lives whether the change be small or big. I have a few teachers in my family and they have all expressed how difficult and time consuming that teaching call be, but ultimately how fulfilling and how much joy it will bring you.

Personally, I would like to teach first or second grade. I love working with kids and I feel like the first years of a students education is important to their success in future classes. Teaching the basics of reading and math is what I’m most excited for. While these students would have some knowledge from the previous year or years in school, I can then continue to build on their knowledge. My old teachers made these subjects so much fun when I was just starting out in elementary and I would like to do the same for my future students.

One of my favorite teachers on TikTok is @ms.cadime. She is a Kinder and first grade teacher. She posts lots of day in her life videos and some of her interactions with her kids. She’s always in a good mood and inspiring for me as a future teacher.

  1. Hey Chandler!
I am so glad to hear about your positive experiences with your teachers and how they helped you decide on your future career. It's a huge decision and I'm glad you had some support in making that decision. I have also pondered with the idea of teaching second grade, the only thing that turns me against it is having to teach all the subjects. In my hometown (where I plan on teaching) the students begin switching classes in 3rd grade so this is the perfect balance for me since I don't necessarily want to teach all of the subjects that are required for the students.
